
Ormond was born in Epsom (Surrey) as the daughter Josephine Ormond, who works as a laboratory technician , as is John Ormond. She is the fifth of five children born to her parents. She first attended Guildford High School and then Cranleigh School. There, her initial lead performances in Guys and Dolls and My Fair Lady were noticed. After a year in art school , she was moved to Webber-Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art where she graduated in 1988. Ormond was first seen on British television in 1989's series Traffik. This series focused on the illegal heroin trade that was thriving from the Far East up to Europe. Ormond played the heroin dependent daughter of the lead character the Home Office minister working to stop heroin imports. The role was a hit and received overwhelmingly positive reviews.
